#169 - McCARTNEY
The legendary Paul McCartney has a very busy time lately, with a new album (The Boys of Dungeon Lane), appearances on Saturday Night Live and the final Stephen Colbert show, a new exhibition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a recent book and documentary. Rob and Alan talk all about McCartney's goings on and review the new album, and get a little melancholy about aging and memory.
First, though, we talk about Sonny Rollins, who passed away on May 25, 2026.
What did you think of the new McCartney album? Let us know! Drop us a line at modernmusicology1@gmail.com or just leave a comment on our socials or whatever podcast platform you're listening to us.

Before that, though, I'll share some of the highlights from my visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to see the SNL 50 exhibit!

#168 - The Music of 1986 (Part 2)
Sunday May 31, 2026
Sunday May 31, 2026
We continue our examination of the year 1986 by talking about the albums that were released in the second half of the year. Metal and rap were reigning supreme with releases from Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer, and The Beastie Boys, but pop and rock offered up some really strong records as well with major releases from Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Berlin, The Pretenders, REM, Huey Lewis and the News, and Sparks. Even The Monkees made a huge comeback for their 20th Anniversary!

#167 - The Music of 1986 (Part 1)
Sunday May 24, 2026
Sunday May 24, 2026
We’re diving headfirst into the first six months of 1986! Join us as we rewind to January through June and relive the music that made 1986 one of the most memorable years of the decade. It was a time when rock and rap were colliding, metal was still reigning supreme, the Minneapolis funk sound was coming into its own, and pop soundtracks were turning lesser-known bands into superstars!
We cover juggernaut releases like Janet Jackson's Control, Peter Gabriel's So, Van Halen's 5150, and Metallica's Master of Puppets, as well as albums by The Bangles, Ozzy, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode, Judas Priest, Prince, Run D.M.C., and many others, plus soundtracks such as Pretty in Pink, Labyrinth, and Krush Groove.
As always you can follow along and listen to all the music we discuss with our Spotify Playlist for this episode.

On April 18, 1981, I saw my very first all-day stadium show, billed the Rock Super Bowl, featuring Heart, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Firefall, and UFO. In this episode I give you a rundown of that show, share some memories from that amazing day, and play some of the songs that the band played that day.

#165 - Should Have Been Bigger: 80s Bands
Sunday May 03, 2026
Sunday May 03, 2026
We sure do love a list! And Loudwire has put out their list of 80s bands that should have been bigger! And we have a lot to say about this list -- the ones we agree with, the ones we don't really like, and the ones who may not have deserved to have been any bigger than they were. Plus we each list the 80s bands we love that we think should have been bigger.
But first we have some music news to cover with the passings of Dave Mason and Alan Osmond, plus a sad announcement from the Indigo Girls.
We'd love to hear your thoughts about 80s bands that should have been bigger. Drop us a line at modernmusicology1@gmail.com or just leave a comment on our socials or whatever podcast platform you're listening to us.

This month on Alan's Record Bin we celebrate the 75th birthday of KISS lead guitarist Ace Frehley. We dig back through the record collection and focus on Ace's early career as a member of KISS and his subsequent emergence as a solo artist with FIVE (okay, SIX) killer tracks! Ace was just as much a force in KISS as Gene or Paul, and this show highlights some of his unique contributions.

#164 - A.I. in Music
Sunday Apr 19, 2026
Sunday Apr 19, 2026
AI is arguably the biggest technological revolution of our lifetime, but it's certainly not without controversy. For every positive application in medicine, science, engineering, etc. there are questions about how far AI should go. Most particularly, the use of AI in the arts is a hot-button issue. Can AI be used legitimately in music, literature, and visual art? Does it threaten to replace human creativity? Is it truly nothing more than the theft of creators' work? We speak with Walter Hieber, founder and owner of PrometheanLink Business Solutions, who helps us make sense of this scary new world we live and create in.
Learn more about PrometheanLink LLC here.
We'd love to hear your thoughts about AI and its place in the arts. Drop us a line at modernmusicology1@gmail.com or just leave a comment on our socials or whatever podcast platform you're listening to us.

Sunday Apr 05, 2026
Sunday Apr 05, 2026
Classical Music
Anthony and Stephanie are "on assignment," so Rob and Alan take the opportunity to discuss one of their shared passions: Classical Music. We talk about our mutual love of classical, how we first came to classical, some of our favorite pieces, and how a new listener can get acclimated to the music.
You'll hear about the music of Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovic and other Russian composers, and more.

Alan's Record Bin #1 - 5 Forgotten AOR Songs
Sunday Mar 29, 2026
Sunday Mar 29, 2026
5 Forgotten AOR Songs
This week Alan from Modern Musicology launches a new side-project! In this series of shows, I'll tell stories behind some of the albums in my collection. This week, we're talking about 5 Forgotten AOR Songs! These are tracks that got airplay on Album Oriented Rock radio stations back in the day but have mostly been left behind, frozen like a moment in time.
You'll hear about two men who walked away from bands at the height of their popularity, a band that was poised to be huge but never quite got there, a singer with a big voice who never quite found her audience, and a new band that maybe sounded a little too much like bigger, more established band.
What's your favorite forgotten song from the AOR era? Drop me a line at modernmusicology1@gmail.com or just leave a comment on our socials or whatever podcast platform you're listening to us.

It's that time of year again! The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has released its list of nominations for 2026. And who should be nominated next!
This year's nominees includes Billy Idol, the Black Crows, INXS, Iron Maiden, Jeff Buckley, Joy Division / New Order, Lauryn Hill, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Melissa Etheridge, New Edition, Oasis, P!nk, Phil Collins, Sade, Shakira, and Wu-Tang Clan.
We've said our piece -- what do YOU think? Who would you vote for? Who do you think shouldn't be included? LET US KNOW!
